Selected Recent Advances in the Stereoselective Synthesis of Isoquinoline and β-Carboline Derivatives with the Use of Chiral Auxiliaries of Natural Origin
Authors: Zbigniew Czarnocki, Aleksandra Siwicka and Joanna SzawkaloVarious aspects of stereoselective synthesis of tetrahydroisoquinolines and tetrahydro-β-carbolines with the use of natural compounds as chirality sources are reviewed. The following low molecular weight substrates are considered: carbohydrates, isoprenoids, hydroxyacids, alkaloids and amino acids. Examples of various synthetic methodologies that employ the above derivatives as chiral building blocks, chiral auxiliaries o Read More

Recent Advances in Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of Heterocyclic Compounds
Authors: Valentina Molteni and David A. EllisHeterocyclic scaffolds represent the central framework of many biologically active compounds. The goal of this review is to present advances in the field of microwave-assisted synthesis of heterocyclic compounds that have been described in the literature since 1994. In particular, it focuses on reactions in which a heteroatom is directly participating in the bond forming process that gives rise to a heterocyclic core. The review is Read More

Reactions of Organic Nitrogen Compounds with Carbenoids and Diarylketenes from Diazoalkanes and Diazocarbonyls
By G. S. SinghThis article describes the current status of research on the reactions of nitrogen-containing organic compounds with carbenoids and diarylketenes, generated from catalytic and thermal decomposition of the diazoalkanes and diazocarbonyls. The mechanism of the reactions suggested is shown, and the potential of the reactions for application in organic synthesis is discussed.

A Centennial Methodology for the Preparation of Heterocyclic Compounds: The Intramolecular Coiodination of Alkenes with Internal Oxygenated Nucleophiles
Authors: Flavia M. da Silva, Joel Jones Junior and Marcio C.S. de MattosA review on the intramolecular coiodination of alkenes with internal oxygenated nucleophiles (alkenols, unsaturated ethers, carboxylic acids and derivatives) is presented. The reactions are discussed with emphasis in the preparation of iodotetrahydrofurans, iodotetrahydropyrans and iodolactones and their utilization in organic synthesis. The intramolecular coiodination of alkenes with less common oxygenated nucleop Read More

Some Applications of Ultrasound Irradiation in Organic Synthesis
Authors: Ji-Tai Li, Shu-Xiang Wang, Guo-Feng Chen and Tong-Shuang LiThe chemical applications of ultrasound, “sonochemistry”, have become an exciting new field of research during the past decade. Scientists now know that the chemical effects of ultrasound are diverse and include substantial improvements in both stoichiometric and catalytic chemical reactions. In some cases, ultrasonic irradiation can increase reactivities by nearly a million fold. The chemical effects of ultrasound fall in Read More
