Green Synthesized Silver Nanoparticles as Silver Lining in Antimicrobial Resistance: A Review

Sharma, Chanchal Garg and Munish GargUnprincipled use of antibiotics has led to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) against mostly available compounds, and has now become a major cause of concern for the scientific community. However, in the past decade, green synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have received greater attention for the development of newer therapies as antimicrobials by virtue of their unique physico- chemical properties. Unlike traditional antibiotics, AgNPs exert their action by acting on multiple mechanisms, which make them potential candidates against AMR. Green synthesis of AgNPs using various medicinal plants has demonstrated a broader spectrum of action against several microbes in a number of attempts. The present paper provides an insight into the scientific studies that have elucidated the positive role of plant extracts/phytochemicals during the green synthesis of AgNPs and their future perspectives. The studies conducted so far seem promising; still, a few factors like the precise mechanism of action of AgNPs, their synergistic interaction with biomolecules, and industrial scalability, need to be explored further till effective drug development using green synthesized AgNPs in healthcare systems against AMR is established.

Polymeric Nanoparticles for Transdermal Delivery of Polyphenols

Vittala Murthy, Sagar Kumar Paul, Harsh Chauhan and Somnath SinghPolyphenols comprise a large group of naturally occurring plant secondary metabolites with various nutritional and health benefits. They are safe and are found abundantly in the diet. Current research on polyphenols focuses on their mechanism and their benefits on human health. However, due to their low solubility and bioavailability, delivery from the conventional route has been a challenge and their translation into clinical applications has been limited. Topical and transdermal delivery of polymeric nanoparticles will act as a novel therapeutic approach for promising delivery of polyphenols. In this review, we have evaluated the existing scientific literature and summarized the potential use of polymeric nanoparticles as a carrier for polyphenolic compounds for delivery via topical and transdermal routes for the treatment of skin cancers such as melanoma.

Compendium of Conventional and Targeted Drug Delivery Formulation Used for the Treatment and Management of the Wound Healing

Iqubal, Javed Ali and Sanjula BabootaWound healing is a complex and dynamic phenomenon that involves the restoration of normal physiology and functioning of injured tissue. The process of wound healing is primarily regulated by various cytokines, inflammatory mediators, and growth factors at the molecular level. Any intervention in the normal wound healing process leads to further tissue damage, which in turn leads to delayed wound healing. Several natural, synthetic drugs and their combinations were used to restore and accelerate the wound healing process. However, the conventional delivery carriers were not much effective, and thus, nowadays, nanocarriers are gaining much popularity since they are playing a pivotal role in drug delivery. Since nanocarriers have their own applicability and benefits (enhance the bioavailability, site-specific targeting) so, they can accelerate wound healing more efficiently. This review briefly discussed about the various events that take place during the wound healing process with emphasis on various natural, synthetic, and combination drug therapy used for accelerating wound healing and the role of nanotechnology-based approaches in chronic wound healing.

A Comprehensive Review on Medicinal Herbs and Novel Formulations for the Prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most prevalent neurodegenerative diseases reported in the aging population across the globe. About 46.8 million people are reported to have dementia, and AD is mainly responsible for dementia in aged people. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is thought to occur due to the accumulation of β-amyloid (Aβ) in the neocortex portion of the brain, nitric oxide mediated dysfunctioning of blood-brain barrier, reduced activity of serine racemase enzyme, cell cycle disturbances, damage of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors and glutamatergic neurotransmission. Modern treatment methods target the pathways responsible for the disease. To date, solely symptomatic treatments exist for this disease, all making an attempt to counterbalance the neurotransmitter disturbance. Treatments able to prevent or at least effectively modifying the course of AD, referred to as ‘disease-modifying’ drugs, are still under extensive research. Effective treatments entail a better indulgence of the herbal bioactives by novel drug delivery systems. The herbal bioactive administered by novel drug delivery systems have proved beneficial in treating this disease. This review provides detailed information about the role of medicinal plants and their formulations in treating Alzheimer’s disease which will be highly beneficial for the researchers working in this area.

Recent Trends in Carbon Nanotubes Based Prostate Cancer Therapy: A Biomedical Hybrid for Diagnosis and Treatment
Authors: Raja Murugesan and Sureshkumar RamanAt present, treatment methods for cancer are limited, partially due to the solubility, poor cellular distribution of drug molecules and the incapability of drugs to cross the cellular barriers. Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) generally have excellent physio-chemical properties, which include High-level penetration into the cell membrane, high surface area, and high capacity of drug-loading by circulating modification with biomolecules, projecting them as an appropriate candidate to diagnose and deliver drugs to Prostate Cancer (PCa). Additionally, the chemically modified CNTs possess excellent 'biosensing' properties, thus helping them detect the PCa easily without a fluorescent agent and additionally, targeting the particular site of PCa. In this way, drug delivery can accomplish high efficacy, enhanced permeability with less toxic effects. While CNTs have been mainly engaged in cancer treatment, a few studies are focused on the diagnosis and treatment of PCa. Here, we have meticulously reviewed the current progress of the CNTs-based diagnosis and the targeted drug delivery system for managing and curing PCa.

Liquid Filled Hard Shell Capsules: Current Drug Delivery Influencing Pharmaceutical Technology

YadavPurpose: Gastric absorption is an upfront route for drug delivery as it is convenient, economical and most suitable for getting the desired systemic effects. Unfortunately, many traditional and newer generation drugs suffer from poor solubility and have lower bioavailability. With a perspective of bringing a novel delivery system in such a condition for old/existing/new drugs, liquidfilled hard capsules hold promise as the delivery system. Methods: Anorganizedstate of the art literature review including patents was conducted to accommodate information on the innovations in technology, processes, and applications in the field of liquid filling in hard-shell capsules. Results: The review findings revealed the importance of understanding the impact of liquid filled hard shell capsules would have in use of complex drug molecules, especially the ones sensitive to light and moisture. This technology can have diverse functions to be used for both immediate and delayed drug release. According to the technology point of view, the band sealing in such hardshell capsules helps in protecting against the tampering of capsule fill. Conclusion: The review provides an insight into the progression in the technology forefront related to formulation development of liquid formulations to be filled in hard shell capsules for better therapeutic potentials and convenience to the patients.
